Cats: A question about their “psychology”?
Question by eschewdefeat: Cats: A question about their “psychology”?
Does your cat exhibit a specific reaction to particular friends of yours? Mine seems to have a very unique and clear response to at least 3 particular friends of mine. Is this common with cats? I thought only dogs did that.
I picked up this cat from a shelter for my uncle a few years ago. After my uncle died “Rufus” came to live with me. He’s now a 24 lb. orange tabby/Maine coon cat. He scares some of my friends. But there are three he really likes and will play with, take food from or sit with to be petted. Even brushed!

Yes it is normal and if they feel a weird vibe they will show it almost immediately.
I think cats specially are very sensitive to people’s vibes… even more than dogs because dogs are friendly most times.

Mind you I am alergic to Cats.
one day on our farm, a Bobtail appeared.. For some reason he became attached to me. Like, he would lay, across my neck and shoulders.
If any one came near he would hiss and dig his claws into me.
I was only one he would let pet him or pick him up.
then one day he disappeared just a quickly as he came.
I’ve had several cats who were terrified of strangers (they were all rescued strays.) The one I have now is very “needy” and will love everyone he comes in contact with. Maybe because he was terribly abused before I adopted him (his fur was torn off his belly & he was poisoned on purpose.)
yes, like my cat Roxie sort of ignores everyone else in my family. She runs away from all my friends & guests whenever they come over except for my cousin Nicole. Also my grandma’s cat Jynx won’t let anyone except for my grandparents, and my cousin Nicole and me pet her. If anyone else even tries then he hisses and sometimes will even bite him/her.
One of my roomates in the Netherlands used to have two cats. Since she got them when they were 6wks old we sorta became mommy and daddy for them. Before i left i noticed the black cat would behave better around my friends we’d have over if WE were around. If we left she’d be indifferent or hiss at them (only the guys though). Unless they came often, they’d get the ‘indifference’ + a brush on the leg treatment. The white cat seemed friendly with most of the guys and indifferent with girls lol Quickly her nickname became Slnt and the other Lesbo…. talk about weird lol
My cat Josie is a odd one. She goes from hating have strangers near her to craving their attention. She actually disliked me for the first 4 years we had her. Now she totally loves me. She “accepts” my mother and one of my brothers. HATES for the most part another brother. She also switches between loving and hating the dog.
XD love that cat.
my sister had a neighbor that was deathly afraid of cats.
when ever she came over the cat would head straight for her.
I do believe they can pick up on people’s energy just like dogs can.
I’m sure my cat has esp
oohh yeah!
my cats love most of my friend but have my mother inlaw or one particular friend walk in and they attack! they hate those two!!! ( the mother in law i get) lol
Domesticated animals have a very gifted insight when it comes to human companionship. While dogs will usually trust unless an aura is particularly odd, cats are catiously aloof. Cats are also extremely loyal to one person while a dog likes many. What you’re seeing is normal behavior.
Oh yes, I have seen this with cats too. It could be something about their scent (either the persons own scent, or the scent of another animal on them, or a perfume etc. that either attracts or repels the cat) . It may also be the voice – - it seems like some cats don’t like low pitched voices, so it will appear that they like women better.
Or something about the voice, scent, etc. could remind the cat of another person they have known who was either nice or mean to them
Also the peoples body language affects the cat’s reaction. For example, it has become a cliché that out of a room of people, a cat sometimes picks the one person who dislikes/ is afraid of/ is allergic to cats– and goes right to them. That’s usually because that is the person who is probably ignoring the cat and hoping it will ignore them. But in cat language, staring is rude and confrontational (unless it is like a mother cat watching her kittens). So the cat may go near the person it perceives as being the only polite one in the group!
Oh, yes! Cats do this and are very definite about their feelings. One of my cats adopted a visitor on arrival and wouldn’t let them sit down without her getting on their lap – she is normally quite stand-offish. All of the cats here have a particular need to force their attentions on people who dislike cats, too……
Sure!
My cat is very affectionate to my family and myself, he always comes to us and lays on our stomachs. He especially likes my stepdad, Tim. He actually LICKS him!! We’re getting an addition put on our house, and he is VERY unfriendly to the guys that come in and out of the house.
I think it just depends on your cats personality.
Cats have likes and dislikes..and cats are very sensitive to who is empathic towrds them, and who dislikes them…some cats find noisy, pushy people too much to handle, some prefer women to men…..so no, this is very common with cats in fact I had a gray & white male who was normally shy, but when a friend of ours would come to visit, Sam would appear and ‘terrorize’ the guy with head buts and attempts to sit in his lap…lol the guy was afraid of cats…don’t tell me Sam didn’t know that and was taking advantage lol…..
