Q&A: what do u think of this question….?

Question by demkah: what do u think of this question….?
PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) has proposed that the government require that dogs and cats no longer be able to ride unrestrained in a car. That is, PETA proposes that pets must either be in a carrying case or strapped into a “pet seat” while in a moving car. They argue that this will be safer both for people and for their pets.

Do you think this is a good law?

If YES, how do you justify the violation of consumer sovereignty? That is, explain why consumers are better off having fewer choices.

If NO, does this mean you favor eliminating all existing safety rules? That is, explain how to tell a “good” safety rule from a “bad” one.

Best answer:

Answer by Ray
It would be a good law because pets deserve the same protection as children & child seats are required for children.

Learning Theory for a New Generation

I spent three days sitting in a conference room listening to Dr. Ian Dunbar talk about dogs, training and learning theory; and somewhere during day three I had an epiphany! You see, I have a degree in psychology and always thought I really understood learning theory. But during this seminar, I started looking at learning theory in a different way. I am not sure if this was Dr. Dunbar’s intention, but it radically changed the way I look at the subject.

Serious question about “alpha dog” training?

Question by naturegirl1831: Serious question about “alpha dog” training?
I am getting a Golden Retriever puppy this August, my first dog ever, and I’m really excited! I have been researching training techniques all my life, I want to be prepared. I’ve been reading up on ways to establish your position as Alpha. Most of them I agree with completely, such as making sure you eat before your dog does, making sure YOU lead when you walk them, etc. However, there is one tip about not letting your dog on the furniture or bed. In the wild, alpha dog gets the highest sleeping position, to watch over the pack, so letting your dog up on the “same level” as you can send confusing messages. Do I have to be really strict about the no furniture rule? I appreciate that a dog can never be fully obedient if it doesnt respect you as alpha, but on the other hand, I really want to be able to relax on the couch with my dog! Would this jeopardize my alpha position, or is it okay? I don’t want opinions though please, just someone who actually knows for a fact. Thanks!
Thanks for the great advice everyone! Just to note, I don’t think I was reading too much into things… I was quoting the alpha training tips from a book, I don’t necessarily embrace all of them completely! I agree with the “invitation” to the furniture idea, I think it’s perfect. I remember reading that it’s okay to share your furniture, but if your dog growls when you make him get down, that’s when you have a problem. I also know that GRT’s are not generally a dominant breed, but I do think all dogs to some degree need to know who is the leader, apparently it makes them more confident and comfortable. Anyway, thanks guys!

Best answer:

Answer by Kip’s Mom
I don’t worry too much about alpha (or the rest of the greek alphabet). My dog is allowed up on the furniture, but *only* when I invite him up. Try that!

Silent whistle for training dog not to bark.?

Question by musician1283: Silent whistle for training dog not to bark.?
Hi folks, I need your help on this one. I am a psychology student and I know how to use contingencies of punishment and reinforcement. Here is the deal. My neighbors have this dog that keeps on barking and barking. They don’t seem to do anything about it to stop the barking and often times they call his name and that is reinforcing the behavior of barking. I don’t want to create any more troubles with them since overall ” love thy neighbor” and calling the cops for barking noise is not necessary when I know I can train their dog from my yard. All I need to know is what brand of silent whistle I can use that it causes a good amount of discomfort on the dog when I blow it just that he associates the dis pleasant “silent sound ” with barking so he will be conditioned not to bark constantly. Any suggestions. The animal will not be hurt during this training purpose. I love dogs, I have 4 of my own. thanks so much community!

Best answer:

Answer by Aduial
You can’t train their dog. The only thing a whistle is going to do is distract the dog briefly before it starts barking again. Or it will irritate the dog into barking more.

The only way to get a dog to stop barking is for the owners to train it properly with exercise, mental stimulation and positive reinforcement training.

You should talk to your neighbors about this problem. Then complain to the police and animal control.

What do you think? Answer below!
