A bottle of Doggie Claws 2005 vintage from Hair of the Dog Brewing Company in Portland, Oregon.

Doggie Claws is a 10,5% abv barley wine style ale, so it should take aging really well. This particular bottle, from 2005, was no exception.

The beer poured a hazy amber/brown color with a nice big white head. It had a wonderful aroma of grains and yeast, honey and some still powerful hops. Mouthfeel is very rich, almost sticky sweet. The first flavor to hit the tongue is the grain note, followed by sweet caramel malts. Then the hops kick in, despite four years of aging they’re still present. The bitter hops linger for minutes in the aftertaste, balanced by the rich, sweet flavor of grains and possibly a little residue of honey.

After four years on bottle this is still a great beer!

Hair of the Dog brewmaster, Alan Sprints, has a personal message on the side of the Doggie Claws bottle: I use Simcoe and Amarillo hops along with dark wild flower honey collected on Mt Hood. This beer is ready to drink now but will improve with age.

The side label on the bottle of Doggie Claws states that Hair of the Dog Brewing Company produces bottle conditioned beers which improve with age.
