We had to say goodbye to our beloved pet of almost 14 years today. She will be sorely missed by all of us. She was quite possibly the best dog ever — all six pounds of her.

Question by : Does anyone know where I can purchase a reliable protection dog?
I’m reposting this as none of the answers in my previous question helped.

I live in a rough neighborhood with my kids and unfortunately packing up and moving is not an option at the moment (nothing available that suits us) and within the past few weeks there have been 3 break-ins dangerously close to our house. In one case the woman was also sexually assaulted. I don’t want to end up like that. Our current dogs are big and intimidating but I know they will never bite someone. I would love to own a dog that my kids can play with in the backyard but also the dog will defend them if the need ever arises. Now, onto why I said “reliable.” See many years ago (3 to be exact lol) a relative of mine purchased a guard dog for $ 14,000 after receiving threatening phone calls from her ex husband. The dog was flown in from Germany and the trainer praised this dog as being “the best dog I have ever trained.” Well one day her ex made good of his threats and broke into her home at night while she was sleeping. The dog did bite but all he succeeded in doing was tearing his jacket off of him and for a while the dog was actually attacking the jacket. She got the dogs attention and commanded it to attack again but her ex kicked the dog and it ran off into a another room and wouldn’t come back out. In end she got a black eye, broken nose, and busted lip. The dog was sent back to the trainer (and would you believe he only refunded less than HALF the purchase price?) Well anyway, Does anyone know where I can purchase a reliable protection dog?

Additional Details
Dogs are not suitable sources for protection.

I beg to differ. Isn’t that what the Doberman was created to do?

A dog can be shot and killed

I am fully aware of that. And you know what? That’s ok. If the dog is shot and killed then that’s one less bullet that could hit my kids or myself. The dog would have served it’s purpose then.

Moondog you OBVIOUSLY did not read the question thoroughly
Lorraine I’m gonna go out on a limb and say you didn’t read the question either?…. Furthermore, if you don’t know of a place to buy a dog then why even bother answering? I have made my descision. I want a dog okay? I might get a gun as well, but i still want a reliable protection dog.

Answer by Easter Eggs
get a gun, save a dog.

Fetch Club Announces Their Official “Grand Opening Bash” Benefiting the “Rabies Challenge Fund”

New York, NY (PRWEB) January 21, 2011

On January 26, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. canine lovers, trendsetters and celebrities will be in attendance to celebrate with their urban canine friends the Grand Opening of Fetch Club located at 85 South Street in Manhattan’s Financial District. Attendees will be treated to an exciting evening of live canine and human performances, a gourmet dog-treat station, personalized dog-tees, professional photo ops, “pawdicures” and much, much more.

On this very special evening Fetch Club will also formally open the doors to their much buzzed about VIP FC Night Club. Party goers will be provided all access guided tours of the 13,000 square foot facility by Fetch Club’s “Human” staff while canine revelers nibble on hor d’ourves and sip on Barkundy, Sauvignon Bark and Pinot Leasheo produced by Bark Vineyards. Fetch Club’s co-founder, Peter Balestrieri says, “The FC Night Club has been designed to be a plush and hip place for pet lovers to mingle, party, and lounge with canine friends.”

Fetch Club has recently been voted one of five best dog parks in the USA by Paw Nation and has been featured in various national and international newspapers, blogs, television programs and media outlets. “The tremendous amount of media and high profile attention Fetch Club has received truly demonstrates what separates the Fetch Club brand from the average dog spa, hotel or boutique,” says Brand Manager, Malcolm Harris. “Fetch Club’s success to date proves co-owners Janna Lee and Peter Balestrieri were correct in their belief they could create and open a facility with impeccable services, modern and luxurious amenities as well as the best possible care for the urban canine.”

Fetch Club’s “Grand Opening Bash” will be sponsored by Pooch Club, Options for Life, SOTU Productions, Poopy Packs, Vital Essentials, and Aroma Paws.

More About the Rabies Challenge Fund:

Research has demonstrated that overvaccination can cause harmful adverse effects in dogs. Immunologically, the rabies vaccine is the most potent of the veterinary vaccines and associated with significant adverse reactions such as polyneuropathy resulting in muscular atrophy, inhibition or interruption of neuronal control of tissue and organ function, incoordination, and weakness, auto-immune hemolytic anemia, autoimmune diseases affecting the thyroid, joints, blood, eyes, skin, kidney, liver, bowel and central nervous system; anaphylactic shock; aggression; seizures; epilepsy; and fibrosarcomas at injection sites are all linked to the rabies vaccine. It is medically unsound for this vaccine to be given more often than is necessary to maintain immunity, yet scientific research strongly indicates that the 3 year booster interval required by state laws may be unnecessary. French challenge study results published in 1992 showed that dogs were immune to rabies 5 years after vaccination and Dr. Ronald Schultz’s serological studies proved that dogs have antibody titer counts at levels known to confer immunity to rabies 7 years after vaccination.

The goal of The Rabies Challenge Fund Charitable Trust is to extend the legally required interval for rabies boosters to 5 and then 7 years by financing the concurrent 5 and 7 year rabies challenge studies currently beginning their third year at the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine and being conducted according to the USDA’s vaccine licensing code, Title 9 Section 113.209 by Dr. Ronald Schultz.

More About Fetch Club:

Fetch Club is situated in a newly renovated and state-of-the-art 13,000 square foot facility with a strong commitment to providing their canine clientele with the utmost clean and comfortable environment possible. Fetch Club has taken into account the four elements to keep their canine member’s health and well being in proper balance:

Earth/FOOD: For every pet’s dietary needs, Fetch Club has packed their boutique with a healthy treat bar, a variety of wholesome FOODS, amazing supplements and a wellness kiosk.

Water/H2O: Our canine friends can quench their thirst, have a bath, or play in the Club’s purified waterfall – absolutely worry-free. Our canine members or visitors can indulge in water that is purified to perfection with the Tensui WATER Purification System wherein all harmful chemicals are removed while also enhancing water with calcium, magnesium, zinc, potassium, vanadium, negative ions, et cetera.

Fire/Sunlight: As for SUNLIGHT, canine members can come and enjoy our amazing skylight in The Park or be treated to an infrared sauna imported directly from Japan. The far infrared heat is, in fact, a necessary form of energy that all living things require for optimum health.

Air/Oxygen: Our canine members also need clean air and plenty of OXYGEN. Indoor air has been shown in one EPA study to be 30 times more polluted than downtown NYC. To ensure all members have the purest air possible, Fetch Club has installed the Air Boss by Trion, an industrial air purification system with charcoal and HEPA filters. In addition to this air purification process, all air passing through the Club’s HVAC system is filtered by the AtmosAir Ionization Air Purification system. The AtmosAir System, deployed successfully in Europe for decades, is the product of original scientific development by Albert Einstein in “bipolar ionization” of oxygen molecules. AtmosAir Solutions has advanced Einstein’s original technology to create the best indoor air purification system available.

Teaching Your Dog to Come

Basic Training, Part 4

Teaching Your Dog to Come

The final part of the basic training of any dog is teaching her to come when called. Whether she’s playing with her doggy friends in the dog park or you’re asking her to come get a treat in a quiet, dignified manner, getting her to immediately respond and approach you when you command is necessary for her safety and your peace of mind.

Once your dog is sitting, lying down, and staying in place when you ask, go back to attaching a long lead onto her collar or halter. Ask her to “Stay” as you would normally, then back away a few feet and stop, still holding onto the lead.

Call her name, saying “Come” in a kind, but firm tone, and give her a treat when she responds. If she doesn’t respond immediately, pull on the lead gently to make her come to you, then treat her.

At this point, ask your dog to sit, lie down, and stay, and you back even further away. Stop, call her saying “Come,” then treat her when she responds. Every time she doesn’t come when called, pull gently on the lead until she answers.

Continue training this way, expanding the distance between your dog and yourself with every session. You may have to reinforce your teaching by starting each new session closer than you ended the previous one, but that is to be expected. As in all other training, don’t spend more than 20 minutes at a time teaching your dog a new trick.

As you become more and more confident that your pet is going to listen and respond to every part of the “sit, down, stay, and come” routine, you can begin to remove the lead and train without using it. Don’t attempt to take off the lead unless you are in your home, a fenced yard, or you have installed an in-ground dog fencing system and you know your pet cannot get away from you.
