Question by Fink: Where to do some backcountry camping with dogs in Texas?
My wife and I would like to take our dogs camping in the backcountry somewhere in Texas. Just found out that Big Bend doesn’t allow dogs in the back country. Bummer. Any other ideas? We have a high clearance off road vehicle. Suggestions in southern New Mexico or Oklahoma are welcome as well.

Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge in Oklahoma
From I-44 take Highway 49 (exit 45). Go west 10 miles to the Refuge gate.
“Charon’s Garden Wilderness Area” has been closed to all access due to hazardous conditions resulting from extreme heat and public safety. But, it’s has started raining again, so you should call to see if it’s open yet. Phone: (580) 429-3222 8:00am – 4:30pm Monday through Friday

Your dog is welcome on the Refuge, but it must be restrained on a leash at all times. This is for the dog’s protection as much as for the wildlife.
