Q&A: anyone know how to “free motion quilt”?

Question by blondie: anyone know how to “free motion quilt”?
i am a beginner quilter working on my second quilt. i have seen so many quilts that i love that have what many people call “free motion” quilting. i have a brother machine and i was wondering if anyone could give me advice on how to do this. i think i may have to shut off the feeder on my machine but i do not know how. i have also see on some videos that there is an attachment that can be used on certain machines. any advice is helpful! thanks!

Yes, the feeder dog on your machine is made for straight stitches. You need one that will change to other directions. And free motion means just that — that you do not follow a rigid pattern as to the design you create with the stitches. You will need to be able to move your stitches in a variety of directions and need a foot that will allow you to do that.

Anyone ever heard of this type of dog training?

Question by snowprincess1313: Anyone ever heard of this type of dog training?
The woman whose place we kennel our puppy at recommended a training book that could help us. The author is Jan Fennell, and she is another modern “dog whisperer”. She’s written several books, but the ones the lady recommended to us are called “The Dog Listener” and “The Practical Dog Listener”.

In these books she features a type of training called Amichien bonding. I won’t go in depth on it now but here is a site describing what it is:
http://www.janfennellthedoglistener.com/about.htm

I was wondering if any of you had tried this form of training and if it worked for you? I am about to implement it with my samoyed.
To Retired: I’m not trying to get anyone to buy this book- I was just wondering how people’s experiences with this form of training were. The link was included for informational purposes. Read the whole question please.

has anyone tried the portable electric dog fences?

Question by Future Cat Lady: has anyone tried the portable electric dog fences?
How well do they work? Have you tried the version that you install by yourself?

Best answer:

Answer by Nedra E
A lady in one of my Pyr Yahoo groups has used it and she likes it a lot. How well they work may depend on your dog’s or animal’s breed that you’re enclosing.

If it’s a version that requires hiring an installer, then I wouldn’t really call it a portable electric fence. I only define something as portable if YOU can move it. -!-

Question by Greeny: Has anyone used the Don Sullivan training videos?
I was wondering has anyone used the don sullivan “the perfect dog” training video. If so how did it work and did you like it. Im thinking about dog classes or training him myself with this video. I would really like to hear from those who have watch the video and have tried the techniques.

Please take your dog to classes. A huge part of going to classes is the socializing dogs need and will get in a controlled environment in the class. Plus you have a qualified instructor who can teach you how to train your dog. Any good instructor has a large repertoire of methods and uses whatever works for each individual dog.

This Don Sullivan video is decades behind in dog training when so-called trainers thought it was ok to hang dogs, no praise, just punishment or harsh corrections. Trainers have found that using positive methods, then proofing, works best. This guy’s stuff would ruin the temperament of the average dog.

Question by : Does anyone know of a good book about dog training?
I am planning on getting a dog, but I’ve never had one before and I don’t know the first thing about training. I want to train it so it doesn’t end up like my cousin’s dog who jumps all over people and barks at everything. I want my dog to be my buddy so please hook me up with some sort of books to give me the basics of training my new dog right.
